Clinical coding falls under the ‘corporate’ workforce grouping of occupations and is a highly specialised niche profession. There are approximately 234 clinical coders in the New Zealand clinical coding sector. The majority of these coders are working in public hospitals. A small proportion work in private hospitals, the mortality and cancer registries at Clinical Coding Services, Ministry of Health, and some are engaged as independent contractors.
The document linked to below provides a summary of the workforce and the training and support that is available. It also provides contact information if you would like to know more about clinical coding.
