The Corporate WSG is leading a significant project to develop a leadership development framework for both clinicians and managers. The project proposes an overarching leadership development framework for the New Zealand health and disability sector that will help to identify, and develop, the sector’s current and future leaders. Never before has the need for capable, innovative and inspiring leaders been so critical – investment in our current and future health leaders is fundamental to the health and disability sector’s success. Action needs to be taken now to ensure that the future leadership of the health and disability sector is secured.
The Corporate WSG undertook a series of workshops with key sector leaders (clinical and managerial) to identify the type of leadership development structure that is best suited to the needs of the NZ health and disability sector. The approach took cognisance of international work as well as the unique requirements of New Zealand’s cultural and social context and proposes a leadership development framework be established.
The framework will enable an integrated approach to clinical and management leadership development across the sector. The framework sets out the capabilities our leaders need to have, the pathways for development and a menu of activities and tools that will assist organisations and individuals to successfully navigate the development journey. These are encapsulated within the context of a ‘learning sector’. This links the framework to current and emerging sector-wide learning needs and builds a quality improvement culture. This is consistent with the objectives of the Quality Improvement Committee ‘to develop whole system frameworks and integrative approaches to quality improvement that support and develop leadership, shared learning, trust and culture change thereby quickening the implementation of innovation and best practice’.
A proposal is currently being developed and will be presented to CEOs early in 2009 for their endorsement.
