The NP Facilitation programme was originally established for a period of 12 months and was positioned in the Future Workforce Portfolio, within the Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Strategy Group (WSG). The WSG provided strategic direction and oversight of Programme delivery. The NP Facilitation Steering Group was established (chaired by Dr Elaine Papps) to lead and guide development and implementation of the NPF programme. This structure was maintained in year two, with some changes in personnel within the NPF steering group.
Within its one-year operational timeframe, the NP Facilitation Project steering group achieved a strong, effective communication strategy, including a well-used, well-regarded website; the development of a role description and network of NP Champions in each of the district health boards; the development of a DVD to assist stakeholders understand how to utilise NP expertise; and provided Innovations Funding to support the employment of NPs. This was recognised by the Ministry of Health and the Chief Nurse who assessed the success of the programme and supported its extension for another 12 months.
Over its second year of operations, the NP Facilitation programme gained more ground in promoting the NP role to employers and raising awareness generally about NP employment. As a result, a comprehensive suite of resources is now available on the role of the NP in New Zealand.
