BPAC NZ LTD CLAG MEETING
On 26 May 2009 the Programme Manager attended the quarterly BPAC NZ Ltd Clinical Advisory Group (CLAG) meeting held in Wellington. BPAC Ltd is contracted by the Programme to provide a national education service (including best practice and utilisation feedback) to PHOs and their contracted providers. These services include the preparation of resource materials for national use in relation to the performance indicators implemented by the Programme (e.g. Best Practice Journals).
Future campaigns which BPAC Ltd will base educational materials on (as agreed by the Programme) include cervical screening, breast screening and reducing the morbidity rates arising from complications associated to diabetes.

MONTHLY REPORTS
Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on the Programme’s monthly reporting process introduced recently to address PHOs’ requests to increase the frequency of data provided by the Programme. You will notice that some of the fields in the reports have been renamed to give greater clarity about what the data in each field relates to.
These reports are based on the data that is available to the Programme at the time the reports are generated.
Please note with respect to Influenza data, if a vaccination has been provided within a particular month BUT is not available via the national collection when the Programme requests data for that month, the vaccination will not be included in the monthly report count. The monthly report information is based on the services that have been sent to the national collection for that month (as opposed to the quarterly reports which are based on dates of service).
The monthly reporting schedule is as follows:

PROVIDER LISTS | SERVICE UTILISATION AND CLINICAL PERFORMANCE INDICATOR REPORTS
The next series of data reports for the period 1 April to 30 June 2009 are due to the Programme by 20 July 2009. Please forward this information directly to merita.tuala@dhbnz.org.nz in the required formats as soon as possible.
QUARTERLY REPORTS
All DHB, PHO and Ministry of Health Performance Reports, Scorecards and Dashboards for the period 1 July to 31 December 2008 have been replaced on the website. It was necessary to replace the reports due to the Programme being sent a number of corrected Service Utilisation and Clinical Performance Indicator data sets AFTER the reports had been initially released. The Programme recognises the importance of ensuring that the data it reports is accurate. The corrected data affected the national indicator values and some regional values.
The Programme’s next series of DHB, PHO and Ministry of Health progress reports are due to be posted to the members-only pages of the DHBNZ website at the end of July. These reports will report PHO progress against performance indicator targets to 31 March 2009.

Work in Development......
CVD & DIABETES PREVALENCE
The Programme is happy to answer any questions about the prevalence model it uses to calculate PHO prevalence for CVD and Diabetes under estimating the number of expected prevalence rates for some PHOs. The model was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health and was based on the most accurate information available at the time. It is being used in different ways by both organisations. The Programme is working with the Ministry of Health to align processes and will be communicating more information regarding prevalence in the near future. The Programme will continue to work with the Ministry of Health in an effort to see that the data collected from PHOs is considered when the prevalence estimates are updated for the 2009/10 year.
Any inquiries can be directed to shane.kerr@dhbnz.org.nz
NATIONAL IMMUNISATION REGISTER (NIR) TRANSITION
The Programme is investigating the activities that need to be considered as part of the analysis required for transitioning from using the PHO Service Utilisation Reports to source immunisation data, to the NIR. The Programme has already been made aware of some data and access issues with the NIR. If you are aware of any issues or concerns that need to be addressed prior to the transition, please forward these directly to Vicky.li@dhbnz.org.nz as soon as possible.
SMOKING INDICATORS
At the request of the Governance Group the four smoking indicators developed for Programme implementation by the previous Advisory Group members (in consultation with the Ministry of Health) have been reviewed by the new Advisory Group.
The smoking indicators are tabled for further discussion at the next Advisory Group meeting and following that, a proposal will be forwarded to the Governance Group requesting that the indicators be endorsed for implementation.
Any inquiries can be directed to vicky.li@dhbnz.org.nz
